TRANSPORTATION TO SBC HOTELS

It’s easy to get a taxi from the Fort Lauderdale airport.  The SBC hotels do NOT have shuttle service from the airport.

TRANPORTATION TO PIER - FROM SBC HOTELS

QUICK & SAFE TRANSPORTATION will offer shuttle service to the pier from the Westin, Doubletree and Courtyard hotels for the cost of $8 per person.  They will have a table at the Westin lobby where you can purchase tickets when you are there for the Pre Cruise Party.

TRANPORTATION TO PIER - FROM FORT LAUDERDALE AIRPORT

If you are flying in on January 5th and wish to take a Holland America bus from Fort Lauderdale International to the cruise port for $19 per person; call 866-929-2332 and book your spot.

Another option is taking a cab to the pier which is about $15 + tip.

TRANSPORTATION TO PIER – FROM MIAMI AIRPORT

If you are flying in on January 6th and wish to take a Holland America bus from Miami International to the cruise port for $29 per person; call866-929-2332 and book your spot.

SHORE EXCURSIONS

Shore excursions can be booked at the Holland America website before the cruise or on board the Oosterdam.  The more popular excursions often sell out so it's a good idea to sign up early if it's something you really want to do.

If you have any special dietary needs, contact Holland America Ship Services at 800-541-1576 to discuss how they can accommodate your needs.

BEFORE YOU GO

REMEMBER YOUR PASSPORT

Don't pack your passport in your checked bag.  Keep it in your purse or personal bag. Because unexpected things happen, make a copy to carry with you or consider saving a photo on your phone.  Also leave a copy home with someone you can reach in an emergency.

CREDIT CARDS

Call your credit card company and let them know where you will be traveling.

WELCOME TO FORT LAUDERDALE - FRIDAY

GETTING TO THE HOTEL FROM THE FORT LAUDERDALE AIRPORT

The SBC hotels (Westin, Doubletree, Courtyard) do not have airport shuttles.  We suggest taking a taxi (approx. $25 + tip)

Be sure to have the address as most hotels have several locations in the Fort Lauderdale area.

CHECKING IN

If you are staying at the Westin or coming to the Westin for the party, be sure to stop by the SBC Welcome table to check in and pick up your gift bag and party wristband (if purchased).

PRE CRUISE PARTY - WESTIN FORT LAUDERDALE BEACH  - 321 NORTH FORT LAUDERDALE BEACH BLVD

Although the actual party doesn't begin until 6pm, SBC cruisers will be gathering at the pool, in the lobby, and in the bar much earlier...  so come on over!

If you have purchased a party ticket, you can pick up your wristband at the SBC Welcome table while picking up your gift bag.  You can also purchase party tickets at the SBC table for $35 per person.

The party will feature light hors-d'oeuvres... a cash bar... and entertainment by Mingo Fishtrap, Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps, Wayne Toups, Shelley King, and maybe a special guest or two!

SAILAWAY DAY - SATURDAY

GETTING TO THE PIER FROM THE AIRPORT

If you are flying into Fort Lauderdale (FLL) the day of the cruise, you are about 2 miles from the pier.

A couple options are:

* Take a cab for approximately $15 + tip

* Arrange Holland America transfers in advance by calling 866-929-2332.  $19, per person one way; $38 per person, round trip.

GETTING TO THE PIER FROM THE SBC HOTELS

QUICK & SAFE TRANSPORTATION will offer shuttle service to the pier from the Westin, Doubletree and Courtyard hotels for the cost of $8 per person.  They will have a table at the Westin lobby where you can purchase tickets when you are there for the Pre Cruise Party.

If you are driving or taking a cab, you will go to Port Everglades - Terminal 26.

BOARDING THE SHIP

Boarding begins around 11am and you must be on board by 3pm.  There is usually an early rush, so we suggest arriving at the pier around 1-2pm.

When you board the ship, your cabin may not be ready and your bags could take a couple hours to be delivered, so anything you might want right away should be packed in your carry-on bag.

FIRST TIMERS

If this is your first SBC cruise and you're not sure where to start, come by the Queens Lounge on Deck 2 from 2 to 3 pm to meet Sara & Amy, the SBC Ambassadors of Fun, and get questions answered.

IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY OBSTACLES ON THE WAY TO THE CRUISE

We will be in the SBC office at 1-800-DELBERT until Wednesday January 2nd.

After that we will be in Fort Lauderdale getting ready for the cruise.  We will check phone messages and email up until sailing but if you need to reach us with an emergency, cancellation or flight delay that won't get you to the ship by 3pm please call 615-390-4643.

ONBOARD THE OOSTERDAM

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

Here is the much anticipated performance schedule.  As always, it is subject to change due to weather and other things beyond our control.

ONBOARD ETIQUETTE

Here at Sandy Beaches Cruises, we don't like to have a bunch of rules.  They cramp our style and then then we have to go around and call people out.  So let's all be considerate of our fellow cruisers and treat each other like we would like to be treated.

Here are a few guidelines:

*  It's not cool to save seats for a show while you're off having dinner or seeing another performance.

If you want to see a particular show from a particular seat... take a book and get there early.  NO SEATS CAN BE HELD by leaving a jacket or towel on them.

* Sometimes we don't realize how loud we are talking.  It happens. Especially after a few Umbrella drinks.

So let's be diligent about keeping our voices down during shows.  And if the person next to you says, "you may not realize how loud you are"...  he's not saying it just to make you mad so don't go nuts.

See where I'm going with this?

SMOKING

The Oosterdam is smoke free except for the Sea View Bar on Deck 9 and the Sport Deck on Deck 11 Aft.  Smoking inside any of the cabins or suites or on the verandas is prohibited and subject to a $250 cleaning fee.

MEDICINE REQUIRING REFRIGERATION

The mini-coolers in the cabins do not stay cold enough to store medication that needs to be refrigerated.  Medicine should be stored in the refrigerators at the Infirmary.

LAUNDRY

There are many options for getting your laundry done while onboard.  Full details and prices will be in your cabin.

INTERNET

Wireless is available in your cabin and public areas.

There are three unlimited data Plans which you can purchase by the day or week.

SURF  - Email, sports, news and more

CABANAS

Relax in your own private cabana at the Retreat on Deck 11 with fresh fruit, sparkling wine, plush robes & towels and MORE!  Cabanas can be reserved for a day or for the whole week. Rates start at $55 per day.

Call Ship Services at 800-541-1576 or visit the Front Office once on board.

DOOR DECORATING CONTEST

You can decorate your door to celebrate 25 years of Sandy Beaches Cruises!

Judging is based on Creativity & Originality.

Most cabin doors are 22" wide.  Doors are metal, so magnets will stick.

Judging will take place on Tuesday.  Winners will be announced on Wednesday and posted in Merch World.

PLEASE use easily removable tape that will not leave any goo on the door and result in extra charges.

We have promised not to damage the doors.

First Prize:   $300 onboard cabin credit

Second Prize:   $200 onboard cabin credit

Third Prize:   $100 onboard cabin credit

Important Information from Holland America:

Door decorations should not obstruct doorways, hallways, or create any fire hazard. All materials must be flame retardant and cannot include any electrical components such as lights. SAN JUAN - A NOTE FROM WENDY & DELBERT

Dear Cruisers…

In case you missed it, we have chosen the El Pueblo Unido Program as a way for to celebrate our 25th Sandy Beaches Cruise  and support the re-building of schools in Puerto Rico following last year's devastating hurricanes.

Thank you for your generous response to our El Pueblo Unido charity request.  It has been tremendous.   Rob Bolt, the director of El Pueblo Unido, explains that the dollars contributed to El Pueblo Unido will stretch far, as administrative costs involved in this project are low.

  • We will be spending the entire day on Tuesday, January 8, in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico (docking at 8 am and departing at 5 pm).

  • Students and staff from Escuela Francisco Manrique Cabrera, part of the El Pueblo Unido program, will be waiting to greet and welcome cruisers when we dock in San Juan.

  • And now we have added a Sandy Beaches Cruise Intercultural Benefit Concert!!

    • The SBC Benefit Concert will be held from 1-4 pm, at the popular Latin Roots night club, less than 500 yards from the pier.

    • In addition to headliners from the SBC Cruise includingDelbert McClinton, Big Al Anderson, Marcia Ball, Shelly King, Carolyn Wonderland, Band of Heathens, and more, the concert will feature two of the most popular traditional Puerto Rican musical styles:

      • Jibaro music is traditionally played by the eponymous mountain-dwelling Latin American culture that live primarily in Puerto Rico. It developed as a fusion of elements from the Spanish trovador music brought over from Andalusia in the late 16th century and local and African styles already present in Puerto Rico.

      • Plena is an Afro-Puerto Rican music, “a hybrid musical form that integrates both European and African elements in its’ form and lyrics.”  Plena was born on the sugar plantations in the early 1920’s. It has a call and response form.  Traditional Plena, like other folk music styles, expressed the struggle of the working class, and documented everyday experiences and happenings of the town, like a musical newspaper.

  • But wait, there’s more!  We will be in “The Rum Capital of the World,” so we have made arrangements with Rums of Puerto Ricoto offer complimentary rum tastings during the show.  Since 1948, Rums of Puerto Rico has promoted the sugar cane industry and the excellence in craftsmanship of all rums manufactured in Puerto Rico.

  • The catch?  Space is limited at Latin Roots,  and we will only have 400 tickets to sell. Because this is a 100% benefit concert for El Pueblo Unido, tickets will be offered for a $25 minimum donation per person, but you are welcome to contribute more to the program.

  • Get your tickets now thru your SBC account.  Click HERE to log into your account and purchase tickets.

  • This is sure to be a monumental success and a lot of fun!

Gratefully yours,

Wendy and Delbert

CRUISE NEWS

PUERTO RICO RELIEF - MORE OPTIONS

Dear SBC Cruisers,

Thank you for the great response to our last newsletter where we introduced you to El Pueblo Unido and how we can help with hurricane relief to students in Puerto Rico.

We understand that it's not practical for everyone to bring a backback so we want to share more info on the project and how you can assist without schlepping the goods.  This will also enable folks who are not cruising with us this year to participate.

Click
HERE for full details.

Thank you everyone for being as excited about helping as we are.

Best,
Wendy & Delbert

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER

A NOTE FROM WENDY

Dear SBC Cruisers,

We are counting the days and are only 72 days away from our 25th Sandy Beaches Cruise.

This year, we are doing something very special to bring some much needed relief and support to our less fortunate neighbors in Puerto Rico.  Hurricanes Irma and Maria have left the Puerto Rico public school system, the third largest in the U.S., in a state of disarray.  So Sandy Beaches has partnered with an inspirational educational relief program that is having considerable success in the aftermath of the hurricanes.

We are working closely with El Pueblo Unido (EPU), an amazing organization to whom Al Anderson has introduced us. EPU is working with Escuela FMC, one of the largest, low-income public schools in the San Juan metro area.

Our first phase of the project is something we hope everyone will want to do.  We are asking that each stateroom provide a student backpack filled with school supplies (i.e. highlighters, markers, post-it notes, paper, index cards, calculator, pens and pencils, etc) for us to share with the students at Escuela FMC. If each person in your stateroom brings a backpack, that is even better, but our goal is to have a least one backpack per stateroom for starters!

We hope you will join us in helping us to support Escuela FMC and the EPU program.  Students and staff from the school will be greeting us when we arrive in San Juan to receive our contributions.  Plans are also underway for an exclusive Puerto Rican musical show (with sit-ins from our incredible musicians) while we are in Old San Juan.

We have seen the generosity of our guests before and look forward to working with all of you to deliver a meaningful contribution to the rebuilding of Puerto Rico as we celebrate our 25th Cruise!

Gratefully,

Wendy and Delbert
